From January to July 31 of this year, 1,462 inspections were conducted and 376 proceedings were initiated.
The Department of Tourism and Sports of the Island Council of Mallorca has carried out from the beginning of the year to July 31 1,462 inspections in tourist establishments (vacation homes and the like, restaurants and apartments offered through digital rental platforms). In this way, 132 illegal accommodations were detected in Mallorca, rented to tourists without having the necessary permits or without having tourist spaces assigned to them. The Island Institution has been the responsible body for tourism planning since January 1, when it received the powers of the Government of the Balearic Islands. Since then, it performs tourist management, inspection and sanctioning tasks.
In the first seven months of the year, 1,462 inspections were carried out in establishments throughout the island, of which 1,006 in tourist accommodation, 255 in tourist intermediaries (digital platforms) and 168 in restaurants and entertainment establishments, among others. During these inspections, 376 procedures were initiated.Regarding the regional distribution, most inspections were carried out in the most touristic places of Mallorca, such as Palma (561 inspections), Calvià (123), Llucmajor (113), Alcúdia (63), Pollença (62), Santanyí (54), Santa Margalida (44) or Sóller (44).
292 administrative offence proceedings were opened for accommodation establishments. Of these, 132 proceedings relate to illegal tourist accommodation. Other proceedings are for the most part concerned with exceeding the scope of the permit. The remaining proceedings concerned restaurants and entertainment establishments (56) and travel agents (10). The Minister of Transformation, Tourism and Sports, Andreu Serra, stressed in a press release that vigorous action continues to be taken against illegal activities in the accommodation rental sector and in the fight against uncontrolled tourism. In the middle of the tourist season, the Ministry will expand efforts to put an end to abuses, he said. The Island Council has 15 inspectors to carry out this work, with plans to further increase the number of inspectors this year.
